Business Declares

a Climate, Ecological and Social Emergency

Our Manifesto

Since Business Declares was launched in September 2019, it is clear that the combined efforts of businesses, governments and citizens have fallen well short of making any real impact on the climate, nature and social crisis, and of delivering a just transition.

The impacts these crises will have on our society and economy, let alone the planet, will be near-term, fundamental and far-reaching for all, including ourselves, our businesses, and our stakeholders.

We believe that business has a major part to play in tackling the climate, ecological and social emergency - the “polycrisis”.

We feel that it is critically important to acknowledge this worsening situation by issuing, as set out in our “The Business Declares Manifesto”, a renewed set of commitments which we ask our members to take on, since we have entered our fifth year of operations in 2024.

Doing this in solidarity with others will have far greater power - together, let’s join forces and create the future we want.

  • Who we are

Business Declares is a not-for-profit organisation, formed by senior leaders with a vast range of experience from the SME, B Corp and FTSE100 sectors, with a business members network underpinned by their commitment towards tackling the climate, ecological and social polycrisis in their businesses, and advocating for urgent systemic change.

  • Purpose

Our purpose is to inspire, encourage and accelerate action within businesses to address the climate, ecological and social emergency - the “polycrisis”.

  • Ethos

Our ethos focuses on being a critical friend to the business community. We are straight-talking, and, at times, provocative and challenging, but provide a safe space which is authentic and non-judgemental.

what we offer

  • We provide and share best practice, practical solutions through our members network, to help, educate and support businesses to plan and act.

  • We convene emerging, provocative topics, such as degrowth and business activism, to motivate change.

  • We advocate for systemic and regulatory change through campaigning, and amplifying campaigns of our strategic partners and wider network of like-minded initiatives, to ensure our work is additive, maximises reach and effects real change.

Working closely with other initiatives ensures our work is additive, maximises reach and effects real change, this includes our official partnership with the Race to Zero Campaign UNFCCC since COP26 which includes all our member businesses.

We engage business leaders and galvanise the voice from the business community, advocating for regulatory change and adding their voice to our resounding, collective call from business to propel a greater political will for urgent system change.
